07 Aug 2023

This year LC’s Class of 23 stayed for three days in the beautiful Alexander Hotel, arriving on Thursday 26 January and going home on Saturday 28. This year the trip combined the seminar with the Opening Retreat which took place on Thursday and Friday when the class took part in team-building projects facilitated by Dir. Hammerschmidt.

There was an island tour on Saturday when the class visited many cultural and historical landmarks including Peter’s Cave, the Museum, Heritage House and the 100-year-old lighthouse, high up on the Bluff. After lunch at Lunch at farm-to-table concept restaurant, Le Soleil D’ or, it was time for the seminar on ‘The Future of the Sister Islands. The objective was for the class to gain a greater understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by the Sister Islands while obtaining insight into how they will shape the future of the Sister Islands in tourism, infrastructure, energy policy, economics, culture and society, and the environment.

Guest speakers included Mr. Kenneth Hydes – Owner of Active Pursuit, Cayman Brac and (retired) VP of Special Projects & Partnerships at Dart; Mr. Malcolm Kay - Area Commander, Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Cayman Brac; and Mr. Jonathan Tibbetts – General Manager of Cayman Brac Power and Light. The seminar explored key questions about the future of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman including: “How are young people encouraged to stay in the Sister Islands after they complete schooling?” “What is the strongest attraction for tourism and how can that product be enhanced?” And, “What is the government doing to ensure jobs are provided in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman?”
