Media in Our Community

07 Aug 2023

Leadership Cayman's 'Class of '23' explored 'Media in our Community,' on 8 February, 2023. The session began with a tour of the Compass Centre on Shedden Road before relocating to the EY offices in Camana Bay, for dinner, followed by the seminar.

The seminar’s objectives were to learn how various kinds of media operate, and the influence they have on our business and professional lives, while exploring the ways in which cooperation could enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the community.

Guest speakers included. Caroline James, News Editor at the Compass, Wendy Ledger, a professional journalist, and cofounder with Nicky Watson, of Cayman News Service, and Jevy Ebanks, a journalist, a local media personality and performer, and Dr. Marc Lockhart, Psychiatrist.

Breakout Sessions, when the 25 students the class divides up into four small groups, enable each group to interact closely with each guest speaker, asking key questions relating to their field of expertise. The speakers move through each of the groups, so that each group gets a ‘one-on-one’ with each speaker, to have an in-depth discussion about the key issues and challenges in todays media and its impact on our community

The balance of today’s media platforms shifts daily as new technologies come online, and the discussions were far-reaching, and covered a wide spectrum of topics, from the rising role of ‘social media journalists,’ to the financial pressures on media houses to move into more sensationalist areas, and whether important topics such as mental health are reported in a fair and accurate way.
