Tourism seminar addresses sustainability

17 Feb 2020

The sustainability of the Cayman Islands tourism product was the central issue on the agenda of the Leadership Cayman (LC) class seminar held on Wednesday, February 12, 2020.

The day’s activities began with an afternoon tour of Island Air, Cayman’s only aviation facility that caters exclusively to private and chartered aircrafts that fly to the Islands which was led by Managing Director Marcus Cumber. Island Air has been serving the aviation community in the Cayman Islands since 1987.

LC class members then travelled to the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort to participate in breakout sessions and a panel discussion with guest speakers Rosa Harris, Director of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Marc Langevin, General Manager for The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman, and Johann Moxam, Cruise Port Referendum (CPR) activist.

The sustainability of the Cayman Islands’ tourism product and the contribution of tourism to the Islands’ economy by cruise and overnight visitors featured prominently in the discussions. LC class members quizzed the panelists about current and future policies and strategies. They also deliberated on the need to strike a balance between stay-over and cruise ship tourism.

Harris provided the group with an overview of key elements of the National Tourism Plan (NTP), which was tabled and approved in the Legislative Assembly in January. The NTP has been developed as the guiding strategic plan that will define, through a consensus-oriented process, a road map for enhancing the competitiveness of the Cayman Islands tourism industry and ensure the sustainability of the islands’ cultural and natural assets.

Walkers was the seminar supporting sponsor, and the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort was the venue sponsor. The major sponsors for Leadership Cayman 2020 are Cox Lumber Limited, RBC Royal Bank (Cayman) Limited and Wheaton Precious Metals.

Special thanks to LC Alumni Candice Czeremuszin for serving as mentor to LC 2020 class members Laura-Jane Airey and Vladimir Logvinov who organised the seminar.
