Leadership Cayman Class learn more about Cayman’s ‘Culture & Heritage’

03 May 2021

The sixth seminar for the 2021 Leadership Cayman Class took place April 21, as they turned their attention to local ‘Culture & Heritage.’

The objective of the seminar was to provide an overview of the arts and major arts organisations and to examine their contributions to our community as well as their impact on business and tourism.

For the seminar, the class visited The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) for a tour of the Salt Water in Their Veins (National Collection) and a brief “Cayman Culture 101” presentation by NGCI Director, Natalie Urquhart.

The class later met at the Greenlight RE offices in Camana Bay for the evening seminar, where they were joined by panellists: Ms. Rose May Ebanks, a prolific weaver of traditional functional items; Kaitlyn Elphinstone, an interdisciplinary artist; Wray Banker and Deal Ebanks, Caymanian artisans.

The session was very interactive. Class members learned how to weave silver thatch palm, played board games such as Warri and Quarto, and learned about the origins of conch horns and gigs. The panel and class also discussed the importance of Caymanian culture to everyday life, and how the culture and heritage can be preserved.

Leadership Cayman class members, Amy Hubble and Jennifer Williams with their LC mentor Kaitlyn Elphinstone organised the seminar.

Logic sponsored the seminar. Cox Lumber Ltd., Wheaton Precious Metals and RBC Royal Bank (Cayman) Limited are the major sponsors of the Chamber of Commerce’s six-month leadership programme.
