Sustainability and the environment

10 Aug 2023

Sustainability and the Environment – the theme of Leadership Cayman’s May 10 seminar- explored ways in which the Cayman Islands public and private sector agencies can work together to protect and regulate environmental conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

There was a tour of the George Town Landfill, which is currently the subject of a comprehensive waste management project which aims to turn the George Town Landfill site into a green space and build infrastructure that, when finished, will improve recycling, and turn materials that aren’t recycled into electricity.

The class relocated to the Dart offices in Camana Bay or for dinner, followed by the evening’s seminar. Guest speakers included L Lauren Dombowsky Chartered Environmentalist and Manager of the Environmental Management Unit at the Department of Environment, Cayman Islands Government; Anna Russell-Knee, an experienced planning and environmental lawyer; and Richard McAree, Dart’s Environmental Social Governance Programme Manager who is on the project delivery team for the Integrated Solid Waste Management System at the George Town Landfill.

During the Breakout Sessions, the Leadership Cayman students further explored key issues such as why proper waste management including recycling and composting is crucial to maintain a healthy environment, while protecting marine ecosystems. Discussions also covered the role of sustainable tourism, the scope of the National Conservation Law, and the implications of climate change policy in relation to protection of natural environments. The evening ended with an informal debriefing session at the Karoo restaurant in Camana Bay.
