Leadership Cayman explores the Criminal Justice System

10 Aug 2023

The objective of the seminar was for the class to get a good overview of the Cayman Islands' criminal justice system and identify the challenges faced by each sector.

Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring, and mitigating crime, or sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts.

There was a tour of HM Northward Prison & Enhanced Reintegration Unit in the mid-afternoon, followed by a short question-and-answer session about the facility. Then it was time for everyone to head into town for Dinner at Singh’s Roti Shop, followed by a short walk to the Court House for the seminar including panel discussions.

Guest speakers included Hon. Mrs. Margaret Ramsay-Hale, Chief Justice, Mr. Derek Byrne, Commissioner of Police, Hon. Mrs. Kirsty-Ann Gunn, Magistrate, Mr. Michael Jefferson, Owner of Magic Touch KY & Magic Touch KY Heavy Equipment, and Mr. Keehon Moore, Supervisor of His Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service.

During the breakout sessions the class divides into smaller groups. Each guest speaker is rotated through each of these smaller groups, allowing students to ask key questions regarding each guest speaker’s area of expertise and experience. During these sessions participants interact with top level professionals in each industry which make the Leadership Cayman programme unique and valuable in building and preparing Cayman’s future leaders.

The evening ended with an informal debrief session at Guy Harvey's Boathouse grill.
